THE PROCESS
How Does Vet Consults Work?
We're here for your pet when they aren't feeling their best and need us most. Taking care of your pet should be easy and straightforward. Get expert advice for all of your pet's medical needs from the convenience of your own home. Book a consult to get one-on-one advice from one of our caring, friendly and qualified NZ registered veterinarians.
STEP 1
Book a Consult
Click on Book A Consult to view Vet availability and select your preferred vet (get to know them more here) and time to make an appointment. You will be asked to fill out a brief questionnaire so we can know a bit more about your pet before your consult. Once booked, you will receive an e-mail with instructions on how to enter the virtual waiting room.
STEP 2
See a Vet
When it is time for your appointment, click your vet's link in the instructions to enter the virtual exam room with your furry or feathery friend. You will receive a one-on-one consultation with your chosen vet in a relaxed and friendly setting. Bring along your questions, just as you would for a normal consult.

FAQ
Have More Questions?
Please see some of the common questions our clients have below. If you are still unsure and have more questions before booking in a consult, feel free to send us an email on the contact page.
What conditions can be addressed with a "Telehealth" online consult?
We Can Discuss:
• Behaviour (anxiety, training, puppy and kitten advice)
• Health & Well-being (vaccination and desexing advice, parasite control)
• Nutrition (diet selection advice for health and advice)
• Emergency Care (advice when you are not sure if it needs to be seen in person)
• Second Opinion
• when Dr. Google just leaves you confused
•...and when you just want expert advice!
What is not suitable for an online consult (emergencies that will most likely require an in-person visit with your regular vet)?
Emergencies that cannot wait:
• Severe bleeding or bleeding that does not stop within five minutes
• Choking, difficulty breathing or non-stop coughing and gagging
• Bleeding from the nose, mouth, rectum, coughing up blood, or blood in the urine
• Inability to urinate or pass faeces (stool), or associated pain when urinating or passing stool
• Injuries to your pet's eyes
• Ingestion of, or suspicion of ingestion of poison (including, but not limited to: antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rat/rodent poison, slug bait, grapes, etc.)
• Seizures and/or collapse

• Obvious signs of pain
• Heat stress or heatstroke
• Severe vomiting or diarrhoea (or more than two episodes in a 24 hour period)

Can you prescribe medications online?
Veterinary Prescriptions
The current New Zealand legislation does not permit veterinary prescriptions to be authorised or issued without examining the patient in person. As such, we are unable to provide medical prescriptions through online vet consults.
How do I know if I need to seek veterinary advice?
When In Doubt
That's what we are here for. If you are unsure, need advice or just want to ask "Is this normal?", "Should I be worried?", "Does my pet need to be seen in person?", then we're here for you. Our vets are able to answer your question, give you a second opinion, provide you with scientifically-based advice, or just confirm that what you are doing is a-ok! When in doubt, book a consult or ask a question.
What types of animals do you see?
Furry and Feathery Friends
We are able to consult on small animals (dogs, cats), small mammals (rats, mice, guinea pigs, chinchillas), avian patients (parrots, pet birds, poultry), as well as large animals (your pet cow, sheep, lamb). Each one of us has our specific niche of experience. Please reach out if you are unsure who would best be suited for your pet question.
What type of computer device do I need?
Tips for a great video call:
• Use strong WiFi or connect via an ethernet connection
• Close unused programmes
• Update to the latest browser version of Chrome or Firefox
How can I prepare before my consult to get the most out of it?
Before we start the consult, organise the following:
• An assistant to hold your pet, if available
• Computer or smart phone with a rear facing camera
• High speed WiFi connection
• An area for the examination where the lighting can be controlled - A room with the curtains closed and lights on is the best place to start
• If your pet is small, a table, desk, or chair where they can be placed on for the assessment
What if the vet is unable to answer my question?
We have extensive backgrounds and experience around science-based research, seeing patients, and examining pets and have not been presented with a question where we cannot help.
If however, we are unable to offer any help or advice from any of our vets in-house, pending approval, your payment will be fully refunded and we will do our best to help you and your pet on the journey to finding out who can best help.
If for whatever reason, you are unsatisfied with the service you receive, please contact us on support@vetconsults.co.nz. We want to do our best to ensure you receive a full and complete answer to your question.
